My hopes for my children…


My cousin, Sylvia Orozco, posted this on facecrack, written by Lee Pitts , and I felt  the need to share it, so that maybe my boys would see it….

” I would really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother And it’s all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room,but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he’s scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you’ll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one. I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head. I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl. May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove . I don’t care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don’t like it.. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend. I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma/Grandpa . May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays. These things I wish for you – tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it’s the only way to appreciate life. 

I would like to add – that I hope you feel strongly enough in your beliefs to stick to them and up for them. Yet, don’t turn your back on those who believe differently. Sometimes, you have to agree to disagree. The world would be a very boring place if everyone agreed on everything. 

Sometimes, you will be wrong. Be honest and humble enough to admit when you are. Don’t gloat when you win, and shake the winners hand when you don’t.  

If someone falls, help them up. One day, you may be the one to fall. Never be afraid to ask for help, but be sure to offer it as well. Thank the Lord every day for the things you have. Your health and your family, and pray for those who who don’t. Pray for those who serve and fight for your right to do so. Pray for not only your friends, but your enemies. Forgive and forget, life is too short to be angry and hold a grudge. 

Sometimes, in life, you have to settle. A car, a house, even a job, but don’t get comfortable there. Always  continue to strive for more. Don’t just live your life content with where you are. But NEVER settle for the person you spend your life with. Hold out for your soul mate and once you have found her, never let her go. 

NEVER give up, never surrender.

…and remember … you are never too old to hold your mother’s hand. 

ADHD in a nutshell…

ADHD is about having broken filters on your perception.

Normal people have a sort of mental secretary that takes the 99% of irrelevant crap that crosses their mind, and simply deletes it before they become consciously aware of it. As such, their mental workspace is like a huge clean whiteboard, ready to hold and organize useful information.

ADHD people… have no such luxury. Every single thing that comes in the front door gets written directly on the whiteboard in bold, underlined red letters, no matter what it is, and no matter what has to be erased in order for it to fit.

As such, if we’re in the middle of some particularly important mental task, and our eye should happen to light upon… a doorknob, for instance, it’s like someone burst into the room, clad in pink feathers and heralded by trumpets, screaming HEY LOOK EVERYONE, IT’S A DOORKNOB! LOOK AT IT! LOOK! IT OPENS THE DOOR IF YOU TURN IT! ISN’T THAT NEAT? I WONDER HOW THAT ACTUALLY WORKS DO YOU SUPPOSE THERE’S A CAM OR WHAT? MAYBE ITS SOME KIND OF SPRING WINCH AFFAIR ALTHOUGH THAT SEEMS KIND OF UNWORKABLE.

It’s like living in a soft rain of post-it notes.

This happens every single waking moment, and we have to manually examine each thought, check for relevance, and try desperately to remember what the thing was we were thinking before it came along, if not. Most often we forget, and if we aren’t caught up in the intricacies of doorknob engineering, we cast wildly about for context, trying to guess what the hell we were up to from the clues available.

On the other hand, we’re extremely good at working out the context of random remarks, as we’re effectively doing that all the time anyway.

We rely heavily on routine, and 90% of the time get by on autopilot. You can’t get distracted from a sufficiently ingrained habit, no matter what useless crap is going on inside your head… unless someone goes and actually disrupts your routine. I’ve actually been distracted out of taking my lunch to work, on several occasions, by my wife reminding me to take my lunch to work. What the? Who? Oh, yeah, will do. Where was I? um… briefcase! Got it. Now keys.. okay, see you honey!

Also, there’s a diminishing-returns thing going on when trying to concentrate on what you might call a non-interactive task. Entering a big block of numbers into a spreadsheet, for instance. Keeping focused on the task takes exponentially more effort each minute, for less and less result. If you’ve ever held a brick out at arm’s length for an extended period, you’ll know the feeling. That’s why the internet, for instance, is like crack to us – it’s a non-stop influx of constantly-new things, so we can flick from one to the next after only seconds. Its better/worse than pistachios.

The exception to this is a thing we get called hyper focus. Occasionally, when something just clicks with us, we can get ridiculously deeply drawn into it, and NOTHING can distract us. We’ve locked our metaphorical office door, and we’re not coming out for anything short of a tornado.

Medication takes the edge off. It reduces the input, it tones down the fluster, it makes it easier to ignore trivial stuff, and it increases the maximum focus-time. Imagine steadicam for your skull. It also happens to make my vision go a little weird and loomy occasionally, and can reduce appetite a bit.

LCPL Dork had his wisdom teeth surgically extracted yesterday and did awesome! He has a great friend taking care of him. I am very thankful he has made such wonderful friends at his duty stations. He has been blessed. Oh, and I will be honest, I am still oddly thankful he is injured – no Syria for my Marine, I didn’t mind Iraq or Afghanistan…but Syria scares me!

Mom gained 5 pounds!

The laundry caught up and the house is clean.

The sun is shining!

Goose is doing awesome in school!!
